Here is a great non fiction story for you.
I have DTE Energy for my energy supplier. I m also a bilateral amputee. I purchased a DTE home protection plan for my appliances and furnace. $30.95 a month.
Recently I called because my washer would go out of balance. I have no legs so it is very difficult to go up and down stairs.
DTE sent out Longtin Appliance Service to handle the repair. The repairman came out and went down stairs and came back up less than 5 minutes later. He said it needed all of these parts ( transmission, drive dogs, water pump leaking, etc) and that the unit would not be worth repairing. estimated cost would be close to $1000.
He left and when my wife got home from work, she helped me get downstairs and we took it apart to see what the problem was. (you can watch videos on how to do this at appliancepartspro.com)
It took us about 15 minutes to remove the cabinet to see what was going on. We immediately noticed that there was no leak from the cast iron commercial transmission, or water pump. What we did see was one of the suspension springs was missing.
I ordered a replacement for the missing spring from appliancepartspro.com. Part cost: $3.26, shipping $6.95
I called DTE to complain and a supervisor said if I was willing to continue with the home protection program until the end of the year, they would credit my account $30. What a joke.
If you have this plan and your appliances are over 2 yrs old and you do not sign up for their optional and costly appliance replacement program and need a repair, you could be in a similar position! But even at that the Longtin repairman either did not want to repair it, or he wanted a nice cash bonus for selling a new unit, while removing the one they said was not worth repairing and fixing it and selling it to someone else..
If I could get rid of DTE all together I would but they have a monopoly on the energy market here.
